The IGRS was established in 2004 with the merger of the two Institutes of Germanic Studies and Romance Studies, founded in 1950 and 1989 respectively. It is one of the ten Institutes of the University of London's School of Advanced Study. Its purpose is to promote and facilitate the study of the cultures of German-speaking and Romance language countries across a range of disciplines in the humanities.
The Institute fosters and contributes to national and international collaborative, cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural research by means of seminars, lectures, workshops, colloquia, conferences, and a fellowship programme. Click here to download our Academic Programme.
Our taught MA programme in Cultural Memory (we are delighted to announce our association with the Imperial War Museum and the Wiener Library from 2010-11) brings together an unparalleled team of specialists in a wide range of disciplines and national cultures from universities in and around London. We are still accepting applications for full-time places only for 2010-11.
Our new MRes programme in Modern Languages is targeted at students with one or two modern foreign languages who wish to pursue postgraduate studies in central London. We also offer a Research Training programme in research skills and methods to graduate students of modern languages (MA and research). This programme comprises a series of eight Saturday workshops.
The Germanic Studies Library, formerly the Library of the Institute of Germanic Studies, now part of the University of London Research Library Services (ULRLS) is devoted principally to German language and literature from their respective beginnings to the present day, and has substantial collections of books, journals, microfiches, theses and archives covering these fields. The Germanic Studies Library is now temporarily located on the second floor of the North Block of Senate House.
The IGRS offices are located on the second floor of Stewart House, at 32 Russell Square, between Senate House and the British Museum, where most of our activities are held. However, we also hold events in the newly-refurbished Senate House where you can also access the University Library.
